Writings on the Wall

With infectious optimism, three young men eke out a living in India's largest cities using public art to express their hopes and dreams. In Delhi, Azad paints film billboards as an escape from the destruction of his home and personal art by government bulldozers. In Bombay, Ashok paints traditional images to keep alive his Warli tribal heritage even though he's abandoned his rural life for the opportunities of the city. Throughout Madras, G Mani puts his name on posters idolizing a film star, gaining power and prestige at odds with his job selling peanuts. For some the public walls hold the most private hopes.

"This superb documentary demonstrates the importance of ethnographic film-making in illuminating the lives of those on the margins of society...we see how powerful a force hope can be in the lives of the poor and dispossessed. This film will be useful in a large number of disciplines, including anthropology, sociology, politics, urban studies, art, and South Asian studies."
Akhil Gupta, Professor, UCLA Department of Anthropology

"The film is ideally suited for classroom use as each character sketch raises a number of issues for discussion: the role of cinema in everyday life; the politics of urban redevelopment; the intersection of cinema and electoral democracy; the commodification of indigenous artistic traditions; and many, many others.

Tejaswini Ganti Assistant Professor, New York University Department of Anthropology Program in Culture & Media

"A stunning documentary that explores art as an expression of class, circumstance and culture

About Angad Bhalla

Drawn to film for its ability to have an emotional impact, Angad chooses projects that highlight voices we rarely hear. After spending months with Indian villagers who had been resisting an alumina project backed by the Canadian company Alcan, he produced his first independent project U.A.I.L. Go Back. The film was used widely as an organizing tool to pressure Alcan over its involvement, and after a 4-year campaign, Alcan eventually withdrew from the project.

He has since worked on videos for groups including Human Rights Watch and the Global March Against Child Labour. His short documentary on the lives of Indian street artists, Writings on the Wall has been broadcast nationally on Canada’s Bravo! Network, India’s NDTV, and internationally on Al Jazeera English. He now resides in New York where he is a community organizer for immigrant rights and is directing a feature documentary on a collaborative art project between a political prisoner and a close friend of his named Jackie.

Wireless Users:

To bring as much quality to your streamed video as possible, each film is streamed at the highest practical bitrate, balancing speed with quality. Generally speaking, wireless connections are a smaller connection (maximum of 54bps), and may sometimes result in "choppy" viewing of the film when bandwidth or connection strength is reduced. If you are on a slower connection of any kind, we recommend that you select a lower bitrate to stream your film.
