Deirdre Fishel |
| Deirdre Fishel has been writing and directing documentaries and dramas for 20 years now; almost all centering on women's lives. Her life gaols ito create complex, realistic portraits of women that challenge mainstream stereotypes and work to improve women's lives. Deirdre started her career at WNYC-TV where she produced a half-hour program on women community organizers working to save the South Bronx. She went on to write and direct two award-winning dramas and a full length documentary about working mothers, The Best of Both. Her dramatic feature film, Risk, premiered in competition at the Sundance Film Festival and had a theatrical, as well as a wide video and international release. In addition to Sundance, Deirdre's work has screened at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Brooklyn Museum, the Museum of Television and Radio and the British Film Institute, as well as at festivals worldwide. Her films have been broadcast on the Sundance Channel, the New York Times Discovery Channel and WNYC-TV, as well as on more than thirty channels abroad. In 1995, Deirdre started Mind's Eye Productions dedicated to producing cutting edge educational films and videos as well as independent films. Projects have included videos on women and depression in the African-American community, separatism on college campuses and teen dating violence. Dealing with Teen Dating Abuse: Matters Of Choice received a 2005 CINE Golden Eagle Award. Deirdre attended the American Film Institute's master's directing program and went to Brown University. She is on the faculty of the New School University and lives in Brooklyn with her daughters Maeve and Lucia. Her most recent project Still Doing It, is being distributed by Filmstransit International and New Day Films. |
